When Paris was liberated by the allies at the end of WWII, De Gaulle made a triumphant speech in which he said, “Paris outraged, Paris broken, Paris martyred, but Paris liberated!” The next day he walked Champs Élysée from the Arc de Triomphe to Concorde with millions of people.
