List
Another beautiful day as we took off from Amsterdam. See us in the shadow on the road?
The North Sea in the distance.
Aarhus, Denmark
Sweden
At the Arlanda Airport north of Stockholm.
We took the Arlanda Express into Stockholm Central Station. It’s a high speed train that runs every 15 minutes and makes the 39 km (24 mile) trip in about 20 minutes. The fastest I saw us travel was just over 200 km/hr (125 miles/hr). Smooth and easy.
Stockholm Central. We got information about busses and bought our Stockholm Card here.
Stockholm Central
First view of the city
We took a bus to Gamla Stan, the Old Town, where we were staying and began walking to our apartment. When I looked at maps before our trip, this street was filled with shops and restaurants and seemed that it might be an easier walk. I didn’t realize our luggage would be bouncing loudly on these cobblestones the entire way.
We found our street easily enough, but walked right by our apartment and had to bounce our luggage back up this hill.
And then we went exploring.
The church is Storkyrkan (The Great Church). The earliest record of this church is dated 1279 which is just 27 years later than the founding of the city.
Near the Parliament Buildings
The tower is Stockholm City Hall.
Rosenbad, the seat of Swedish government.
House of Parliament
Riddarholm Church, the burial church of Swedish monarchs.
The Riksdagshuset (Parliament Building) and the Bank of Sweden
Tyska Kyrkan, the German Church. The congregation was formed in 1571. This building was constructed from 1638-42,
Stortorget, the oldest public square in Stockholm and one that we enjoyed very much.
The Stock Exchange Building, which houses the Swedish Academy and the Nobel Prize Museum and Library.
This fellow played while we ate dinner. I thought he was quite good, actually.
We had one of our favorite meals at this restaurant in the square.
I had grilled halibut and Jen had meatballs with cream sauce and lingonberries. Very Swedish.
View from our table.
Heading home after dinner in Stortorget.
Almost there.
