List
On Saturday morning, we slept in a bit, and then walked to the bus stop for our only trip on a Copenhagen bus. Really can’t say enough about the public transportation system. The buses were clean, frequent, and on schedule. In each bus stop there was an electronic display board telling you the numbers of the next few buses and how many minutes until they arrive. Really amazing. We traveled to the Norreport Station so we could begin our day at a food market that sounded like fun.
Walking to the market.
Torvehallerne Market
There was a shop called Grød that served big bowls of gourmet oats, oatmeal, and unique toppings. Very long line, so we didn’t wait for that. I went to get a french press Ethiopian coffee and a latte for Jen. She bought a hot cinnamon roll and a brown sugar cinnamon roll.
We had our coffee and pastries at a table outside looking at this park across the street called Israels Plads.
Then we walked to Rosenborg Slot (Castle).
The back wall of Rosenborg Barracks, one of two barracks of the Royal Danish Coast Guard.
Built in the early 1600s by Christian IV as his summer home, the royal family turned it into a museum in the 1830s. It is what you picture as a castle from this period, complete with turrets, a moat, a beautiful garden, portraits of the family, and riches beyond your dreams stored in the treasury in the sub-basement.
We found these busts to be just a little creepy.
Three silver lions guard the Throne of Denmark.
Throne Room
Their eyes, mane, and rump are covered with gold.
Throne used for audiences.
The Treasury, under the building.
The bird on the hedge is a Eurasian Magpie.
A game of Kubb in the King’s Garden, Kongen’s Have .
On our way to Amalienborg Slot.
The Marble Church, or Frederick’s Church. It is the largest church dome in Scandinavia, with a diameter of 31 meters.
The Alexander Nevsky Church, the only Russian Orthodox church in Copenhagen.
Amalienborg Slot is the prime residence of the Danish royal family, Queen Margrethe II and the Crown Prince Frederick and Crown Princess Mary..
It is said that this statue of King Frederick V cost as much to produce as the four buildings that surround it.
Amaliehaven, a garden on the waterfront.
Fountain, Frederick V statue, and the Marble Church.
The new Opera House, given to the city by Maersk, the world-wide shipping conglomerate.
Royal Danish Playhouse
Nyhavn, 17th and 18th century homes on the canal, filled now with restaurants and cafes. Hans Christian Anderson lived here for a while.
We ate at Ved Kajen at Nyhavn and had fried plaice (flatfish) small white potatoes, salad, and Carlsberg beer.
Beginning our walk home. This is Amagertorv, one of the oldest squares in Copenhagen, dating from the middle ages. The Stork Fountain is on the right. The square is part of the Strøget pedestrian street that runs the length of central Copenhagen.
Helligåndskirken - Church of the Holy Ghost, one of the oldest churches in Copenhagen, on Strøget.
Gammeltorv, the oldest square in Copenhagen. In the center is Caritas Well, constructed by King Christian IV in 1610 (same guy that built Rosenborg Slot).
The Church of our Lady (Vor Frue Kirke) is a National Cathedral of Copenhagen. It stands at the end of the street where our apartment is, and across the street from Copenhagen University. Crown Prince Frederick and Mary Donaldson were married here in 2004.
