Winter Prep and Jen's Birthday

On a cool  fall day, Brian and Mark came over at 2 am to begin a great day of smoking and grilling to have some delicious meat for the winter. We had one smoker, two charcoal grills, and a gas grill  to smoke three pork shoulders, rotisserie two eye of the round roasts and one chicken, and grill eight boneless chicken breasts. We were going to have some terrific meals during the winter.

In addition, we grilled mini crab cakes and roasted butternut squash and apple flatbreads with prosciutto, goat cheese, and balsamic glaze to have for a wonderful lunch.

It was a long, fun day and we celebrated with a great dinner. Aly was beginning to feel better after being diagnosed with the flu (in spite of having the flu shot) and she was able to join us at lunchtime. We ate some of the pork along with baked beans that Mark had cooked on the grill and butternut squash risotto that Alexis made.

We closed the day with a special birthday surprise for Jen. First, we sang to her and she blew out the candles on her birthday cake that make made for her. And then, she and Kaylee opened her cards and gifts. It was a great way to end a memorable day.
