It was time for an escape from the winter cold, snow, and ice so we spent a week in Florida with Doug, Peggy, and Jen’s mom. We had a great time and had a chance to spend some time with Mark Mitchell, Jen’s cousin, and Peggy’s brother, Wayne, and her sisters-in-law, Dutch and Laura.
This is the view from the new addition to Doug and Peggy’s house, a very, very nice third floor that provides great vistas at sunrise and sunset as well as a very comfortable retreat for reading, napping, and talking.
If you look closely at the upper right, you’ll see the ever watchful eye of the mother dove in her nest. This tree is in Doug and Peggy’s yard.
We’re on our way to Cumberland Island in Doug’s boat and passed this ship from the Sea Sherpherd Conservation Society docked in Fernandina Beach.
The Dungeness ruins, a mansion built by Thomas and Lucy Carnegie. It was completed a few years after the death of Thomas in 1886.
This live oak was simply magnificent. There were many of these in what was called a maritime forest and there were many other plants, including a cactus and orchid as well as ferns and mosses, growing and living on its branches.
The wild horses that live on Cumberland Island are really on their own. There is no care, food, or oversight provided by the Park Service.
Mark Mitchell, Jen’s cousin, came for a visit. Wayne, Peggy’s brother, is on the porch on the right.
