July 6 was Dan’s 39th birthday. (Is that possible?) Dan, Courtney, and Owen were planning a bike trip from Arlington to Mount Vernon (about 21 miles each way) and since the girls love Mount Vernon as much as we do, it sounded like a perfect time for us walk around the grounds while the bikers were on their way.
So we walked through the upper gardens, the sloping lawn down to the river, watched the blacksmiths at work, and had quite a visit with Martha Washington.
The bikers arrived, loaded Owen’s bike into the van, and headed back to the house. Just a short time later, we were at Rocklands Barbecue for dinner and then had a birthday celebration for Dan.
Another very, very fun day in Arlington that we will always remember.
Louisa had an outfit that she’d purchased at Mount Vernon on a previous visit and caught many eyes while we were there.
Martha sits in her chair and as people come into the room and leave, she tells stories, answers questions, and poses for photos. She is a wealth of knowledge about Mt. Vernon and their life in Virginia, and never leaves character.
Cara asked the blacksmith why they were moving that thing up and down. He did a very nice job explaining that the bellows pushed more air into the fire and made it hotter.
