We drove to Leland to watch the sunset and saw our first indication of the damage that occurred in the storm about two weeks before we arrived.
While the building is in very bad shape, the quality of the art at the Gwen Frostic studio is as beautiful as ever.
This cabin was built in 1856 and was typical of those used by early settlers. It was moved to this site and restored.
Great lunch on the shore of Bowers Harbor at the Boathouse restaurant. I had fish and chips, salmon and whitefish.
Amber Sands. Jen’s family stayed here many summers in the 60s. It was almost directly across Lake Leelanau from our cottage.
While Doug, Joel, and Kristen took a charter fishing trip in Lake Michigan, we explored the Leelenau area.
When we arrived on Saturday, we noticed this church and wanted to return to take a couple of pictures.
We didn’t realize that in the early 1900s there was a scandal involving a murdered nun, suspected inappropriate relationships, and a confession that didn’t ring true.
Earlier in the week, Peggy had started reading a book she found at the cabin called “Isadore’s Secret” telling the story of a nun, Sister Mary Janina, who went missing from the church at Isadores Corner in 1907. It was this church.
The true story has become a book, a play called “The Runner Stumbles” that has had two runs on Broadway, and a movie of the same name, starring Dick Van Dyke as the priest.
When we saw these in the distance, we thought they were some kind of unusual grapevine. Turns out that they are actually hops (glad that Peggy was with us).
