Strauss at the Kennedy Center, Puppets from around the world, and American Cool

We spent the day in DC, enjoying “American Cool” at the National Portrait Gallery, Civil War era history at the Petersen Houes, dinner at Burger Tap & Shake in Foggy Bottom, puppets from around the world, and a terrific concert by the NSO celebrating the birthday of Richard Strauss.

A Spring Day in Washington

We had lots of time before the NSO concert started so we decided to go to the American Art Museum just off the mall and see what we could find.

The concert was a performance of four Richard Strauss compositions in honor of the 150th anniversary of his birth.

First, the Kennedy Center shuttle to the Foggy Bottom metro station.

And from there, on to the Gallery Place station.

Before we went through the Art Museum and Portrait Gallery, we walked through the Petersen House, where Lincoln died.

Lincoln died in this room. This is a replica of the bed, the original is in Chicago.

James Wilkes Booth rode a horse down this alley as he began his escape.

Back to the museum where an extraordinary collection of photos of American personalities whose lives define “American Cool”.

Just outside the museum

When we returned to the Kennedy Center, we were surprised by this collection of puppets from Brazil and South Africa.

These were from Brazil and were for the “Little Theater”.

These were created by Handspring Puppet Company.

Located in South Africa, they are best known as the creators of War Horse.
