Cross Country Racing

We continued Jen’s birthday celebration with one of her favorite events of the year: the Fair Hill International cross country races. It’s a day of watching over one hundred horses and riders compete and endure a course that is almost four miles long and includes over 20 jumps. It was a perfect autumn day and the riders and horses were unforgettable.

Wagons transported people from one end of the property to the other.

The start of the race.

Many, many people bring their dogs. Many different breeds and all sizes. This dog was one of the prettiest, in my opinion. His lower legs were the brown color you see on his face.

This photo appears to show the horse stopping at this jump……..

But then, it pushes off with those incredibly powerful hind legs and it’s over the jump and on its way to the next one.

At the first jump, this horse has a bit of trouble on the landing and the rider is thrown. Fortunately, both horse and rider were OK.

This horse pulled up before a jump and seemed to be in a little pain so it is being transported for a more thorough examination by the veterinarians at the race headquarters.

At the end of the race, there are dozens of these young people who cool the horse down and make the horse as comfortable as possible.
