The Netherlands

The art and history we experience in Europe is always moving and touches us in ways we didn’t anticipate.  We visited Delft, in Holland, for the first time on this trip and it was very touching to be walking on the same streets that Vermeer walked when he created his masterpieces.

At left, Vermeer’s “View of Delft”, painted in 1660-61.

Below, today's "View of Delft”. Almost 360 years ago, Vermeer painted his cityscape of the town where he was born, grew up, died, and is buried. His painting is from this location in Delft, from a slightly higher vantage point. It is one of his most popular paintings.

But the history and art wasn’t the best part of The Netherlands.
