We had been looking forward to the first concert by the National Symphony Orchestra for some time. Yo-Yo Ma was one of the featured soloists and his performance of a Tchaikovsky concerto and an unaccompanied contemporary folk / bluegrass song was spectacular. Also performing that night was a young organist named Cameron Carpenter on the new Rubenstein organ in the concert hall. Neither Jen nor I had ever seen anyone play an organ quite like this young man. It was fresh, passionate, and brought the audience to its feet. They announced that there were three justices from the Supreme Court in attendance and that they had raised 1.3 million dollars for the NSO with this opening night.
